A mother and her 11-year-old son were kidnapped from their home in Burgundy on Monday in a ransom plot targeting the father's cryptocurrency business, marking the latest violent crime against crypto entrepreneurs in France. The four attackers held the victims overnight before France's elite GIGN police unit rescued them from a hotel room in Val-de-Marne on Tuesday around 6am, according to the report. The kidnappers reportedly seized about $17,800 (€10,000) in cash and valuables after tying up the father, a crypto entrepreneur, and threatening him with mutilation. Upon discovering that the family’s crypto holdings were held in a time-locked wallet, the attackers abducted the woman and child, demanding a $400,000 (€340,000) ransom. The ransom was not paid before the launch of the rescue operation, which saw 100 gendarmes including GIGN members mobilized. The mother and son are in good health following their ordeal, according to authorities. Crypto kidnappings in France The kidnapping represents the latest in a wave of "wrench attacks" that have plagued France's cryptocurrency community , in which wealthy crypto holders are attacked or kidnapped by would-be robbers. Recent incidents include the kidnapping of a French magistrate for a crypto ransom, a home invasion attempt targeting Binance France's CEO, the kidnapping and mutilation of Ledger co-founder David Balland, and an attack in which the perpetrators posed as French police to gain access to the victim’s home. The issue has been exacerbated by recent data breaches. According to reports in French media , a former tax agent jailed for using her access to expose the details of a prison guard had also researched cryptocurrency investors. Speaking at Paris Blockchain Week, French minister Jean-Didier Berger said that his office has taken “preventative measures” against crypto wrench attacks, including the launch of a prevention platform. He added that he and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez were working on a more detailed plan to address the issue in the coming weeks. The crypto industry is also seeking to address the issue of wrench attacks, with one specialist insurance provider launching a dedicated kidnap and ransom insurance product for digital asset holders earlier this month.
